Pack a lunch, clean your glasses, and open your books because we're going to school, kids. We all could use a Freshman course in THC, the most buzzed about cannabinoid of them all. For the OG smokers and nerdy stoners, don't sleep in the back--I promise we're sharing knowledge that will benefit someone you know who might be curious about medical or recreational marijuana as it becomes a more widespread topic. If you never heard of any of it, don't be intimidated, it is pretty simple stuff.

Basically, cannabinoids are the unique chemical compounds secreted by plants, that bind to corresponding receptors in our brains. There are at least 85 documented different cannabinoids and they all produce unique effects in our body by acting on specific parts of our physiology. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinoid) is the most discussed of them all because it appears most commonly in the weed available for consumption both recreationally and medically. The two different types of THC-concentrated plants are Sativa and Indica.

Sativa:

Sativa-dominant plants are usually tall and thin and sport a light, bright green color. Although sativa strains may tend to produce higher concentrations of THC than indica strains, they tend to feel less potent in general. Sativas are perceived as less potent because their effects tend to be more cerebral focused as opposed to indica strains, which are felt more throughout the body and therefore more immediately noticeable. These are the strains that may make you want to do a bunch of things, think a lot of things, and enhance the senses etc.

Sativa-heavy strains are effective for (recreational):

  • Mental Clarity
  • Elevated creativity and productivity
  • Mood-enhancing

Sativa-heavy strains helps those suffering from:

  • Depression
  • ADHD
  • Mood Disorders
  • PTSD

Indica

You can spot indica ladies by their wide leaves and squatty plants. They usually grow darker green leaves and tend to be higher in CBD/ provide more pain relief and highs that are felt throughout the body rather than in the mind. These are the strains that may make you feel mellow, comfortable, and hungry!

Indica-heavy strains are effective for (recreational):

  • reducing stress
  • muscle relaxation
  • Inducing appetite
  • reducing nausea
  • reducing pain

Indica-heavy strains helps those suffering from:

  • Glaucoma
  • Insomnia
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Cancer

If you have access to do so, playing around with what kind of strains you like can be fun and rewarding :) Even if you're still on a get-what-you-get-situation, this information can help you better recognize what kind of weed you are smoking and still learn about what you like and don't like, need and don't need better.

What kind of strains do you like? Let us know in the comments.
